trip to Kozel'sk
Dec. 7th, 2002 10:37 pmWe found a magic short sword in the grotto. Last time Turok carried a magic weapon we found (a mace), its magic eventually transferred to his sword. Now he is carrying both that short sword and Skullcreeper, and he has agreed to nightly scans so I can try to see if his sword absorbs magic again.
Last night I didn't notice much of a change. Tonight I saw a slight change. The new sword's aura is a little weaker, though not fundamentally changed. It's hard to see a change in Kotara-nar.
I wish I had some way of recording the state of an aura from day to day, so I wouldn't be relying on my memory to check for changes.
December 17 (Tuesday)
We reached the road today. Travel should go easier now -- which is good, because it's been snowing steadily for three days now. If it weren't for the magical hut to warm us up at night, this would be pretty miserable. I mean, I can dry myself off and warm myself up magically, and do the same for Hrolf and my horse and the other party members, but it doesn't last long in this weather. Brr.
Something is definitely happening to the swords. I wonder if this is the influence only of Kotara-nar, or if Skullcreeper is influencing it somehow. We have too few magic weapons to establish a control and conduct a proper experiment; I will have to make do with what I have.
It was snowing tonight when Hrolf and I went out flying, so we didn't stay out long. I'm getting better at balancing when my "wings" are wet, which is good. I'll probably master it right around, oh, May.
December 18 (Wednesday)
The new sword is definitely losing magic. I stared at Kotara-nar for a good long time, and I think it's growing stronger, rather than the other sword just bleeding magic away. Which makes sense; the laws of nature and magic demand that energy not just disappear; it has to go somewhere. I tried to explain this to Turok in more detail, but I could tell his heart wasn't really into it. Oh well.
December 19 (Thursday)
The magic continues to diminish in the short sword and grow in Kotara-nar. I thought I saw a hint of the sword's essence in Kotara-nar, but if so it vanished quickly. Drat.
It stopped snowing today, and the sun even came out for a little. The snow on the tree limbs is very pretty, especially when it sparkles in the sunlight.
I had a nightmare last night about fighting my evil twin. Where did that come from? Dreams are weird.
December 20 (Friday)
There are major changes in the swords from yesterday, and I definitely saw a hint of the other sword's magic in Kotara-nar this time. Kotara-nar isn't changing, really; it's more that this new magic is being mixed in. I can't tell if this will fundamentally change Kotara-nar yet.
Our reprieve from the snow and clouds was short-lived. I'm glad Prolix can make that magical hut each night.
December 21 (Saturday)
We arrived in Kozel'sk late today. This city is large, comparable in size to Covanion, I think. We found a good inn with good food -- though not as good as in the Gastreyr -- and decent beer. I'll be happy to let other people cook for us for a few days.
The short sword is no longer magical. It looks like Kotara-nar ate it, magically speaking. This is very strange.
Tomorrow I am going to go shopping, and also look for a temple (or at least a priest) of Pelor.
